Prior to 1845, Louisiana College had become one of the country’s leading educational institutions, even comparable to Harvard’s enrollment, as nearly 300 students took part in some courses. But its position deviated from the inaccessible state and the country failed to support it economically, leading to its merger with the Mississippi Methodist Institute Centenary College. The college was established to celebrate the 100th anniversary of John Wesley’s British Methodist Church. Centenary suffered economic losses and purchased Jackson’s factories and buildings and moved to Louisiana. The price was $10,000; sin embargo, the Methodist meeting in Mississippi paid only $166.66 and never paid the balance. Then in 1921, under the leadership of the former Minister of the First Methodist Church of Shreveport, President George Sexton, the college began an efficient football program subsidized by local boosters. The plan was very successful. It was not until the Second World War that Centenary was an impressive campus. There are only three brick buildings – the Meadows Museum (then the administrative building), the Jackson Hall (formerly dormitory, science and teaching building, and cafeteria) and the Haines gym. But in 1945, President JJ Mickle came to the construction boom. Most of the buildings on campus today are the result of his vision. Today’s students have access to a wealth of technology.
