The first four community colleges in Kansas were founded in 1919, and GCCC is one of two community colleges that still exist. It was created by the county election on April 1, 1919 and opened in September of the same year. GCCC initially shared the facilities of Sabine Hall and Calkins Hall on the 100th block of Buffalo Jones Avenue with Garden City High School and opened the first class of less than 30 students. The first graduate, Garden City’s Mildred hopes to get a degree in the spring of 1920. In 1954, the college moved to the newly-built Garden City High School, and in 1958 it first occupied its own campus where Buffalo Jones Primary School was located. The first effort to establish the GCCC as an entity independent of the Garden City Public School System was launched in 1958. It was killed in the Kansas Legislative Council and the second attempt was rejected in 1962. In 1963, the college moved back to the Sabine and Calkins Halls, and used the nearby Ben Grimsley Gym and a group of adjacent World War II military camp buildings. The Kansas Legislature passed the Community College Act in 1965, authorizing the establishment of 22 independent colleges, including the GCCC. This authorizes the agency to collect taxes, carry out its own plans, and operate independently of the K-12 school system.
