The three-day event and a series of community forums installed September 2017 President Geoffrey S. Mearns as the 17th President of Ball State. His lectures are a new beginning, respecting the achievements of the university and its vision for the future, including strengthening the partnership between the university and the Muncie community. The proud past of Ball State’s unwavering belief in education based on creativity, values and intellectual creativity began in the late 19th century, when Muncie business leaders envisioned a local university to help promote the city’s development. The far-sighted were five Ball Brothers-Lucius, William, Edmund, Frank, and George industrialists and philanthropists who moved from New York to Muncie to expand their glass container business. The school opened a small private teacher training school in 1899. After the community struggled to maintain the college’s failure, the Ball brothers purchased the land and buildings of the institutions that had closed down and donated them to Indiana. This gift became the Eastern Division of the Indiana Normal School, which began in 1918 to meet the needs of more and better teachers in Indiana. In recognition of the generosity of the Ball family, the Indiana Congress changed the name of the school to Ball Teachers College in 1922 and then to Ball State Teachers College in 1929. The college becomes a universityIn the 1960s, regional teacher colleges began to attract teachers from outside the Midwest, where students sought out majors in business, architecture, and other emerging disciplines.
