In 1991, retired Marine Corps officer James P. Etter founded the American Military University (AMU) and opened up new horizons by providing career-related distance education for military learners with unique needs. In the next 10 years, more undergraduate and postgraduate courses have been added to help students take the leadership role in the military and prepare for the post-military career transition. In 2002, AMU was reorganized into the American Public University System (APUS), an American public university (APU) established to provide equally high-quality, affordable and flexible education for more motivated working adults. Today, the University System is one of the largest providers of online higher education, offering more than 200 academic programs to students enrolled worldwide. The student body is filled with ambitious professionals from all fields whose common motivation is to continue their education and prepare to play their professional potential. After extensive research, careful planning and curriculum development, two doctoral programs were launched. Our Ph.D. in global security and strategic intelligence is the only course taught online by a regionally accredited university and supported by highly accredited faculty and staff for decades. In January, our first group of doctoral students began their peak in achieving educational achievements. Our Master of Nursing (MSN) program is accredited by the University Nursing Education Board (CCNE), an independent certification body dedicated to improving public health. The Bachelor of Nursing (BSN) received this professional certification in 2012. After four years of rigorous self-study and IFSAC field trips, the International Fire Certification Conference (IFSAC) received associate degrees in fire science and emergency and disaster management, accreditation of bachelor’s and master’s programs.
