Austin Peay is a four-year public, master-level university offering more than 56 majors and 63 different majors. In 1939, the National Board of Education authorized schools to offer Bachelor of Science degrees. The degree was first awarded to the Spring University graduating class in 1942. According to the Act of the Tennessee Legislature on February 4, 1943, the name of the school was changed to Austin Pey State University. In 1951, the State Council authorized the College to grant a Bachelor of Arts degree, and in 1952 offered a graduate degree with a Master of Arts in Education. At the November 1966 meeting, the National Board of Education granted the status of a college university with effect from September 1, 1967. In February 1967, the National Board of Education authorized the University to grant a Master of Arts and a Master of Science degree. In 1968, an associate degree was approved. In 1972, the State Board of Education handed over the governance of its higher education institutions to the Tennessee State Board of Directors.
